Long before there was a website, a U.S. trademark or even a formal Dr. Just Kidding brand, there was a young man in Madras who enjoyed communication, performance and doing things a little differently.

For Sridhar “Sri” Rangaswamy, humor was not something invented later as a marketing concept. It grew alongside writing, public speaking, radio, theatre, debate and a lifelong desire to connect with people.

Over the years, those interests moved through many different settings: college in India, All India Radio, a Tamil television quiz show, workplace theatre, corporate public speaking, American radio and stand-up comedy.

Eventually, a phrase Sri used naturally in everyday conversation became an identity of its own:

“Just kidding.”

Today, Dr. Just Kidding brings together three ideas that might initially seem unrelated: comedy, motivation and inspiration. But when its history is traced from the beginning, the combination makes much more sense.

The Story Started in Madras, Not on a Comedy Stage

Sri grew up in Madras, now Chennai, India. He attended Ramakrishna Mission North in T. Nagar before studying English Literature at DB Jain College under the University of Madras. His own account of those years describes a strong interest in communication, leadership and finding ways to stand apart rather than quietly blend into the background. Growing up in Madras

College became an early laboratory for that personality.

He was interested not only in academics but also in media and creative communication. During the early 1990s, he participated in All India Radio youth programming and appeared on the Tamil television quiz program Sindikka Oru Nodi.

His professional résumé likewise records experience as an All India Radio Youth Leader/on-air personality, alongside later radio work in the United States.

Looking back, these experiences were important for a reason that had little to do with comedy alone.

Radio teaches a person to communicate without seeing an audience. Quiz programs demand quick thinking. Public speaking requires confidence. Writing requires an ability to organize an idea so another person will understand it.

All of those abilities would eventually become part of Dr. Just Kidding.

Writing Was Part of the Story Too

Sri’s early creative interests were not restricted to a microphone or stage.

He recalls writing in both English and Tamil, contributing to publications including Alpha Magazine from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, and even creating and publishing an independent youth magazine called Gateway.

That experience matters because Dr. Just Kidding would later become much more than a stand-up identity.

The official website today includes articles on motivation, persistence, health, spirituality, personal experience and making an impact. Its current presentation describes Dr. Just Kidding as combining spontaneous comedy with motivational thinking rather than treating them as two separate worlds.

The roots of that approach can be seen much earlier: communicating an idea, telling a story and finding a way to make people pay attention.

The Income Tax Years Added Theatre to the Mix

Another important part of the history came through workplace performance in India.

Sri’s résumé records Modern Gandhi, an original theatrical concept that he wrote, directed and acted in for the Income Tax Recreation Club in Madras.

Another talent résumé identifies the performance as an award-winning drama associated with the Income Tax Department. It also records achievements in Carnatic music, writing, public speaking and debate.

This period helps explain an important characteristic of Dr. Just Kidding today.

Sri was not simply learning to tell jokes. He was learning how to use performance to communicate an idea.

That distinction eventually became central to the brand.

Comedy could make someone laugh, but it could also make someone think.

Professional Life Strengthened the Public Speaker

Sri’s later technology career may seem unrelated to comedy, but it added another layer to his communication style.

His professional journey eventually included senior technology work and public-speaking opportunities, including Oracle OpenWorld and other industry events. His talent résumé records him as an Oracle OpenWorld speaker in 2014 and a Big Data speaker in Amsterdam in 2013.

By then, speaking in front of an audience was no longer unfamiliar territory.

That became important when comedy arrived more formally.

Then Came the Stage

According to Sri’s own background material, a coworker encouraged him to perform stand-up at a company event in 2013 in front of roughly 250 people.

He went onstage without the stage fright many first-time performers might expect.

The experiment worked.

The surviving account says his combination of confidence, natural humor and previous public-speaking experience helped him connect with the crowd.

His comedy résumé similarly records a stand-up performance before more than 250 people at a company holiday event.

What began as one performance became something larger.

Sri subsequently appeared on The Dave Ugly Show at Jonas Mount Radio in South Carolina. According to his records, the appearance led to a weekly comedy spot that continued for about a year, with routines touching on pop culture and social subjects.

The performer who had experimented with radio, theatre and public speaking in India was now building a comedic identity in the United States.

How “Just Kidding” Became Dr. Just Kidding

The name itself did not begin as a corporate exercise.

“Just kidding” was already one of Sri’s recurring expressions. His background material describes it as a catchphrase he naturally incorporated into his routines and everyday conversations.

That made the eventual identity unusually personal.

Dr. Just Kidding was not a fictional character invented by a branding agency. It was an extension of the way Sri already communicated.

The “doctor” element also fitted the philosophy that gradually developed around the persona: bringing laughter, positivity and encouragement to people.

The goal was not simply to be funny.

As Sri explained in one interview:

“I want to mix motivation and comedy… I want to inspire and make people smile.”

That idea became the foundation of the brand.

Comedy and Motivation Became One Platform

Today, the Dr. Just Kidding website describes its specialty as “spontaneous, conversational comedy that makes your heart smile.” It places stand-up comedy alongside motivational speaking and emphasizes desire, faith, patience and persistence.

That combination is unusual, but it reflects the path that created it.

  • Sri had experienced the microphone before stand-up.
  • He had written before blogging.
  • He had performed theatre before building a comedy persona.
  • He had spoken professionally before addressing audiences as Dr. Just Kidding.

And he had spent years interested in motivation, spirituality and community service before those themes appeared together online.

Dr. Just Kidding therefore developed less like a conventional comedy business and more like a collection of experiences gradually finding one name.

2016: “Dr. Just Kidding” Becomes a Registered U.S. Trademark

A major milestone came when the identity moved from an informal stage name to a federally registered mark.

Official USPTO records show that the application for the DR. JUST KIDDING service mark was filed on January 12, 2016. It was registered on the Principal Register on August 30, 2016, under U.S. Registration No. 5,030,763.

The registration covers online journals and website content involving comedy, inspiration and motivation, including non-downloadable comedic videos. The record identifies January 11, 2016 as the first-use and first-use-in-commerce date for those registered services.

This is important because it formally captures what the brand had already become.

Not comedy alone.

Not motivational speaking alone.

But a platform combining comedy, inspiration and motivation.

The trademark remained active and was renewed in December 2025, according to the USPTO record.

From a Personal Trademark to Dr. JustKidding, Inc.

The next stage was institutional.

USPTO records show that the original DR. JUST KIDDING trademark was initially associated with Sridhar Rangaswamy individually. In 2024, the entire interest in the mark was assigned to DR. JUSTKIDDING, INC., a Florida corporation. The USPTO recorded that assignment on September 17, 2024.

That transition represents something larger than paperwork.

A personality that began with spontaneous humor had gradually become an organization capable of carrying the name forward.

The Smiling Face Becomes Part of the Identity

The evolution continued with a second federal registration, this time for the visual identity associated with Dr. Just Kidding.

USPTO records show that an application for the distinctive Dr. Just Kidding logo was filed on June 26, 2024 and registered on April 1, 2025, under Registration No. 7,744,842.

The USPTO describes the logo as a smiling face with a mustache, closed eyes, a hat, large ears with earrings, curved elements and circles surrounding the character.

The registered services once again center on online content involving inspiration, comedy and motivation.

This second registration gave the visual side of the identity formal recognition alongside the Dr. Just Kidding name.

The Purpose Was Never Just to Be Famous

It is tempting to tell the story as a progression of milestones: radio, stage, website, trademark, corporation and logo.

But that would miss the point.

Sri’s own comedy and motivational résumé describes Dr. Just Kidding as a network intended to connect with people who want to share a story, be inspired and have a hearty laugh, with the broader goal of bringing positivity, laughter and healing and making a difference in people’s lives.

The website carries much the same idea today. Its articles move easily between humor, faith, motivation, perseverance, health and personal reflection. Its media archive includes comedy, music, radio interviews, professional speaking and even Sai Sharan community events.

That range is not accidental.

It reflects the person behind the name.

A Life of Different Experiences Under One Name

Perhaps the most interesting thing about Dr. Just Kidding is that there was no single moment when everything began.

The foundations appeared much earlier.

  • A schoolboy learning discipline in Madras.
  • A college student studying English.
  • A young broadcaster at All India Radio.
  • A contestant thinking quickly on Sindikka Oru Nodi.
  • A writer producing his own youth magazine.
  • A performer creating Modern Gandhi.
  • A technology professional speaking before professional audiences.
  • A first-time stand-up comedian walking onto a stage in 2013.
  • A radio performer earning a recurring spot.

Then came the name, the website, the federal trademark, the corporation and finally the protected visual identity.

Seen together, these are not disconnected chapters.

They are the evolution of one idea:

communication can make people think, but it can also make them smile.

Still Just Kidding, But With a Purpose

The phrase “just kidding” normally tells us not to take something too seriously.

Dr. Just Kidding turned it into something more.

Humor can reduce distance between people. A story can encourage someone who is struggling. A song can change the energy of a room. A motivational message can push someone to try again.

And sometimes a joke can simply give somebody a much-needed smile.

The platforms have changed from radio microphones and workplace stages to websites, digital media and federally registered branding.

The purpose has remained remarkably consistent.

Make people smile. Help them think. Encourage them to keep going. And leave behind something positive.

That is how a familiar phrase from one man’s everyday vocabulary gradually became Dr. Just Kidding.

And, as Sri would probably add:

Just kidding.

But not about the purpose.
